The first chakra is called the root or base chakra and is found at the base of the spine. It vibrates slowly and is associated with the color red. The color red is said to represent courage, passion, and loyalty. It is also the color of the spectrum most available to the eye.
Elements Associated with the Root Chakra
In addition to a color, the chakras also have other elements of association. The root chakra is said to vibrate at the same frequency as the musical note C. Singing or matching your voice to this frequency can help heal or balance the root chakra.
The essential oils of the root chakra are cinnamon, garlic, sandalwood, and patchouli. Crsytals that can be used to heal the root chakra are bloodstone, hematite, and ruby.
In The Book of Chakras: Discovering the Hidden Forces Within You, Ambika Wauters delves into the attributes of the root chakra. She says it is representative of life force energy that urges one to eat, sleep, and feel protected. It represents the action a person takes to stay alive and to feel safe in the world. Feelings of insecurity can lead to a loss of energy through the root chakra.
When the Root Chakra is Unbalanced
In her book The Psychic Pathway: A Workbook for Awakening the Voice of Your Soul, Sonia Choquette discusses the root chakra and how it can affect individuals if it is overactive or under active.
A person with an overactive root chakra can develop certain behaviour as a result of a distorted need for safety. The person may experience the following:
- Self-centered attitude
- Nervousness
- Aggression
- Self-indulgence
- A lack of balance in life
- Paranoia
- Food cravings of sugar, coffee, animal fat
- Compulsion to drink excessively or take drugs
A person with an under active root chakra may develop behaviour that allows them to retreat from the life force represented by the root chakra:
- Daydreaming
- Depression
- Chain smoking
- Delusions
How to Access the Root Chakra
Both Choquette and Wauters suggest the following methods to access the root chakra and balance the energy flow in this area:
- Cultivate patience so energy doesn’t seep out;
- Trust in life to get through difficult times;
- Work towards fulfilling dreams;
- Being flexible in situations that arise;
- Being grateful for present life situations and work towards future goals;
- Meditation and prayer;
- Generosity towards others, and;
- Visualizations involving the energy of the root chakra.
A Balanced Root Chakra
Having a balanced root chakra means being grounded in life on earth and meeting ones security needs. A person with a balanced root chakra works towards the life they want while at the same time is grateful for the life they have. A balanced root chakra is evident in a life that is going smoothly.
There are other Chakras –Wheels of Energy and all seven of them are important to finding balance in life.
